Before I began working at Duncan & Toplis, I was a professional footballer.

I left home in South West Wales at 16 to sign for Portsmouth in their youth team and reserves while they were in the Premier League. Harry Redknapp was gaffer and they’d won the FA Cup so it was a good time to be there. I trained alongside the first team with DeFoe and Crouch, it was brilliant.

Unfortunately, I broke my leg and I was released when my contract came to an end after two amazing years. After that, I trialled for a couple of other League One and League Two teams but I eventually decided to go on and do my A-Levels.

How did you get from professional football to accountancy?

When I left football, I didn’t know what I wanted to do so I enrolled for a degree that would open doors for a broad range of opportunities and because I liked working with numbers, I got a Master’s degree in Accounting & Finance.

While I was studying, Leicester City offered me a job doing community coaching in schools, youth clubs and in deprived areas. After university, they offered me a job in their finance department which would have been really good, but they advised me to join an accountancy grad scheme because it would give me better opportunities, a better learning experience and it would help my career more.

So what led you to Duncan & Toplis?

I applied for some of the big London firms, but I really didn’t fancy the London lifestyle and working as a small cog in a massive machine. When I was invited for an interview at Duncan & Toplis it was much better; they introduced me to everyone, they gave me the opportunity to have a cup of tea and they even gave me a lift to and from the train station. They were just so welcoming and I’m really glad that they offered me the job.

The company has a really good reputation in the East Midlands and their Loughborough office is growing so this is a much better opportunity where I can be recognised for the work I do and have a better work-life balance.

The good thing about this company is that while it has the corporate vibe, it also has a more relaxed and personal touch. I’m learning a wide range of skills, we have a laugh, we go out for lunch and for drinks now and then, it’s a really good team to be part of.
